Aug 09, 2019 Looks like I don't have to worry about the unfinished fan remake I posted above anymore as it appears we've got an official Master of Magic sequel or Remake on way (courtesy of Slitherine who've bought the rights from Atari's IP dungeon and just made the announcement on their site)!!!
This is from the developers who posted over at the Octopus Overlords forum and asked us to help spread the word, sounds interesting as all Master of Magic remake news always does at least at the beginning.' If you’ve been waiting years for a genuine successor to Master of Magic (as I have) you’re in luck.
We the fans and developers at Wastelands Interactive have decided to create one. Work on the project started nearly a year ago in a 2D development environment.
As it evolved it was moved to a 3D environment and the basic game mechanics have started to take firm shape.I think it’s not necessary to explain here what is MoM, so it’s enought with this list of features: Master of Magic Spiritual SuccessorD20 System - Units, Spells and Heroes will all draw from the D20 rule set during the battles.4X deep playabilityHero Units - Recruit heroes to lead your forces into battleTwelve Spell CirclesUnique RacesMultiple victory conditionsmuch moreWe’re working to develop a rather new and in-depth magic system for Worlds of Magic. The world itself will span a number of planes and a majority of the content will be created procedurally. No two games have to be exactly the same (although they can be if you want them that way).
We’re adding new features every day, and we would truly appreciate any suggestions. What did you like most about Master of Magic? What do you feel is a must for the new game? What would you like us to add? Is there anything else we should consider?Every contribution will be MUCH appreciated. It will be my pleasure to ask any question here, and you can find more info on google, as I’m not able will be able to post links:P. Is their website and forums.
Here we go again x 2Looking at their games done, all of them are 2d hex based wargames, which I imagine don’t need exactly a big budget. They want to jump from that to a complete Master of Magic remake, in 3d??That implies several different races, hundreds of types of units if we include monsters and other creatures, and hundreds of spells, features like create your own wizard, magical items, etc. With what budget exactly??edit: exactly from thisto a 3d game with stuff that have to be modeled, texturized, skinned, animated, particle f/x for the spells, etc. It would be more believable if they would say they are just doing a fantasy hex-based 2d wargame, like Fantasy General. Dfs:It’s a no-win.If they copy Mom and give it a new graphics wrapper, folks will whine that they didn’t fixohadmantium based hobbit heroes or something.Lord help them if they change a single modifier from the original.
Then“Oh, it’s good, but they didn’t really re-make Mom. Somebody needs to do that.”Good luck to them and everything.
I would love another good game.Since no-one has actually managed to make a modern day version of MoM, thats pretty much empty talk and conjecture. Also, bear in mind this is a spiritual successor, meaning it can be anything from an FPS to a faithful follow-up to the game. The thing is, many have found during development that the ideas MoM is based on, are harder to implement than it seems. If it was easy, we’d seen carbon copies by now.AoW did pretty well in making a game close to MoM, and they didn’t get bashed for it at all. Actually, its one of most loved TBS games these days.

Well, yeah WarrenD, but I’m tired of indies promising a MoM remake without understanding that one of the main features of MoM apart from being a fantasy 4x TBS, was the epicness and vastness of the game, and you can’t do that epicness with the type of stuff that indies usually make: a small, focused game, limited on unique content. And of course big studios with the budget that the project needs is not interested in doing fantasy TBS.That’s the reason we haven’t still a good MoM remake. It’s doing a more expensive Civilization because it’s like making an almost Civ and then saying “hey let’s add several different races with their own units and buildings and tactics, and dozens of creatures and monsters, and hundreds of spells, and heroes, and magical items”.Maybe if a studio recognizes that and chooses to make it old school, in painted 2d, at higher resolutions than the original, but in 2d, and with “limited animation” (it’s not like we need detailed animations for the units, it’s a tbs, in the end we skip the animations or use them with a fast forward setting).

KevinC:Personally, I couldn’t care less about the MoM thing. If it’s a good strategy game they’ll get my money and I’ll be happy. This exactly.Unlike, say, X-Com, MOM isn’t a great candidate for slavish re-creation - I loved it to death, but it was always buggy, imbalanced, and had poor AI.What people remember so fondly about MOM is not the game itself, but their visions for what the game could have been – and of course everyone’s vision is different.Since they can’t see what’s in my head, l say they should just make the best damn game they can and I promise not to worry about how closely it follows MOM. Here are my recommendations:(1)Ditch 3d and stick to something similar to what we see above with the 2d hex-based wargame. I can’t tell you how disappointed I’ve been in the past few Civilization games and their 3d terrain and units that do nothing more than make it very difficult to see what the heck is going on and where things are. Give me back a boardgame looking board please.(2)Make sure the broken stack-of-doom that was a sure win in MOM isn’t possible. MOM was horribly broken, mostly due to this.(3)Make sure end game turns aren’t like doing my taxes. I don’t want to move 1,000 units, manage the budget for 200 cities or click on 500 things for one turn due to end game overload.EDIT: bolded part should haven been 3d.
KevinC:I’m no expert but multitudes of unbalanced strategies and making the AI competitive seem to me to be mutually exclusive goals. I’d think you need to embrace one or the other. But why? As long as the AI is able to make use of (at least some of) the unbalanced tactics as well, things should be golden, no?An important cornerstone of MoM was the crazy (yes, and sometimes unbalanced) stuff you could do or totally ignore.I actually thought it was a pity that, in later versions of the game, things like flying, invulnerable, invisible paladins became much less viable because the AI had a tendency to spam Dispel Magic spells, which would force you to re-enchant all the units again, with all dispelled spells. It was doable, but extremely annoying.Edit: I realized I own at least one game from those devs: Time of Fury. My faith in this MoM remake just pulled a Felix Baumgartner.rezaf.
Dear Abandonia visitors: We are a small team that runs one of the largest DOS Games websites in the world. We have only 3 members of staff, but serve 450,000 users and have outgoing costs like any other top site for example: our servers, power, rent, programs, and staff. Abandonia is something special. It is a library of old games for you to download. It is like an old gaming arcade with all the old games in their original format. Abandonia is a place where you can find great old games and have fun four hours and years.
To protect our independence, we are dependent of our friends using the site. We run on donations averaging around 6 USD (5 Euro). If everyone reading this gave the price of a cup of coffee, our fundraiser would be made easier. If Abandonia is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online for another year. Please help us forget fundraising and get back to Abandonia. Master of Magic was the very first CD-ROM game I bought.
It was before I even had a CD-ROM. This tells you something about how badly I wanted to play this game. I read the manual and the spell book from cover to cover and looked at the back of the box dreaming about playing it. That sounds pathetic now and I guess it was back then as well. Still by the time I finally did have a CD-ROM equipped computer the game did not disappoint. I played it for months over and over again and was completely enthralled with it and now so many years on I am sure you will be as well. Here are the reasons why.Master of Magic plays like a cross between civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic.
As a Wizard of one of a number of races you must build towns cities and raise armies in an attempt to defeat up to three other wizards in a battle to control the both the planes of the world. Each race has its own selection of units and may or may not be able to build all the different buildings available. You may have as many different races in your empire at any given time but you start with only one race. The choice of which race to take should depend on your style of play.
Some races have good units quickly but are very restricted in which buildings they can build and are never able to build the truly awesome units (like the Gnoll). Others are slow starters with very generic and weak units early on but once their cities have had a chance to build themselves up their units will rule the battlefield (like the Humans or the Elves). The Civilization aspect of the game is what you start with.
You have only a single hamlet with two armies as you start the game and from there you must explore the world and build your empire. Your city must grow and fore that to happen you need to produce food. Buildings can be build to increase the food production or industrial production, shrines, temples and Parthenon’s help to keep your population from revolting. Sounds familiar? Of course it does, this is all standard civilization fare.
In the overland map you can lay roads to speed up your armies and settlers set out for your cities to found new outposts. But Master of Magic is more then just a civilization clone.Instead of researching new technologies you research new spells and these spells give a whole new dimension to the experience. The spells you can cast affect all kinds of aspects in the game. It can make your ships move faster, your troops fight better, raise whole mountains and even stop time itself. Of course you can also summon a whole host of magical creatures to fight in your armies. The amount of spells you can cast is limited by two elements. First you need to have enough Mana to cast a given spell.
You can think of Mana as magical money that you receive from temples and from magic nodes you have opened. The second is your ability.
This ability dictates how much Mana you are allowed to use each turn. Both of these grow as times passes, which means that the further you progress the more important magic becomes to your efforts.Battle is resolved in a tactical map. The players take turns moving their units and casting spells.
This is a vast improvement over the win or lose all approach found in Civilization. Units can be damaged and still survive combat. You can even withdraw when things start to look ugly but you might still lose your units and lose some prestige.Another aspect you will not find in Civilization (but you will find in Heroes of Might and Magic) are heroes. Heroes will occasionally come to you offering their services.
These heroes range from pathetic sword waving morons to absolute champions that can wipe out an entire enemy army single handedly. As your reputation increases better heroes will offer you their services. Even the most powerful hero needs to be careful early on though. Heroes gain levels as they become more experienced. With gaining levels their abilities as well as hit points and damage increase. Some heroes can casts spells of their own while others focus more on melee combat. Magical items you will find in your exploration of the world can enhance your heroes even further.
Late in the game heroes become very powerful indeed, to the point that no army can stand up to even one of them. This brings me to the one of the weak points of the game, balance. Not only heroes can become insanely powerful. This could even be argued as being a legitimate part of the game. Also one unit in particular is far too powerful. The Paladins are a human unit that can mop the floor with just about anything even heroes.
It takes a long time for the human player to build them and the other units the humans have are not spectacular but once they are in play the owner will win almost every fight easily. The other weak point is poor AI. Being as complicated as it is the computer players do a poor job of managing their countries and armies. Often a single well prepared army can destroy an entire empire. Luckily there is a multiplayer mode that offers more challenge if you can find someone that is willing to play this game with you so many years after the release.Graphics are better then can be found in Civilization but they are still not as good as found in other games.
Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (1804) On July 11, 1804, years of escalating personal and political tensions culminated in the most famous duel in American history: the standoff between. Duels in american history. The Duel (also known as The Point of Honor: A Military Tale) by Joseph Conrad; Two officers of Napoleon's army fight a number of duels over many years. The story was transferred to the screen in 1977 by Ridley Scott as The Duellists. The Duel, a philosophic novella by Anton Chekhov; War and Peace: Pierre and Dolokhov duel. Here are 5 famous duels from American history. The United States currently finds itself in a rancorous political moment, with partisan name-calling on the one hand and much hand-wringing about the classless nature of the debate on the other.
Water animation and animated units are about as good as it gets. The various statistical screens found under the F buttons give out marginally interesting information but neither do they get in the way. They can be safely ignored. Overall the layout of the screen is conservative but nothing is missing. All in all Master of Magic is a classic of the gaming industry.

Solid game-play as well as no competition saw to that. The fan base of Master of Magic survives to this day and many still regularly call for a sequel. During development of Master of Orion 3 this call was particularly loud and quicksilver (the developers of Master of Orion 3) said that if MoO3 was a success there might very well be enough credit to start making Master of Magic 2. If only MoO3 had not been such a dismal failure. You can find a patch to version 1.31 in the extras section! We urge you to apply it as that will fix quite a few gameplay issues and make your gaming experience even more pleasurable!
We have also now added ver. 04 of the patch and the in-game help test expansion to the extras section.
